Portico Journal Archive License

The Journal Archive License, which went through an extensive vetting process involving members of the publishing and library community, provides participating libraries a means to formalize their relationship with the Portico Archive.

Highlights of Journal Archive License Agreement

  • The Journal Archive License provides a participating Library with access to archived journal content maintained by Portico. Access to archived content is described under Section 2.2 of the archive license.
  • There are predetermined waiting periods specified for trigger events and perpetual access claims. These times were established after extensive discussion with representatives from across the scholarly publishing community and represent a compromise between the needs of publishers and librarians.
  • A participating Library shall not permit anyone other than Authorized Users to use the Archive.
  • The Portico Archive will consist of archival versions of articles and issues from scholarly journals originally published or otherwise distributed in electronic or digital form, or in both print form and electronic or digital form.
  • The Portico Archive is intended for educational and other non-commercial use by participating Library and its Authorized Users.
  • The participating Library may designate up to four staff members per campus or system branch that will be provided password protected full access to the Portico archive for verification and testing purposes only.
  • Initial two-year term with automatic one-year renewal.
